Common Questions.

How does it work?

The basic idea is simple: each person is represented by a little avatar. By clicking or dragging your mouse, you can move around the room. If you get close enough to someone else, a videochat opens. You can see other people moving around the space and talking to each other, but you cannot hear or see their conversation unless you stand in the small circle around them.

How do I move around the room?

Click anywhere in the room with your mouse and your avatar will make one ‘step’. Hold the button pressed to drag your avatar around.

How do I chat to other guests?


If you want to join a conversation, just move close enough to the group until your avatar stands within the coloured circle. You can also use written chat from anywhere in the room to communicate with individual guests, your current group or the whole room.

How do I invite guests to my room?

Just copy/paste the URL of your room and send it around. People can join your room with one click (no registration or login required).

How many guests fit into one room?

There is no limitation. As soon as over 36 guests enter the room, a new room is opened that is identical to the original one. These identical rooms are called ‘area 1’, ‘area 2’, etc. and are shown as tabs between the videos and the room edge. Users can switch between those copies with a click. If you’re planning an event with over 250 guests, we recommend creating several rooms. Just reach out and we can help you set up your event successfully.

Can all guests speak to each other at the same time?

They can, but in practice people prefer to chat in smaller groups. If you’re the host and you want to make an announcement, we recommend you use the announcement feature or the written chat feature to communicate with everyone.

How do I get my own room?

You can generate a new room for yourself by clicking on ‘get your room’ at the bottom right. Just name it and it will be sent to you via email. As host of the room, you will be able to set an admin password and configure the room.

Can I turn off video and audio?


You can turn off your video by clicking on the camera icon at the bottom of the room. Other guests will see a black screen when you are part of their conversation. You can turn off your audio by clicking on the microphone icon at the bottom of the room. Other guests will not be able to hear you until you unmute.

If I'm the host.

Can I prevent guests from entering my room?

Sure! If you’re the admin, just set a password for guests by clicking on the gear icon (Settings). Guests will only be able to enter your room if they provide the password beforehand.

Can I create topics or areas of conversation?

You can draw little topic areas on a picture and upload it as your background. This way, guests will be able to move to the area that interests them most.

How do I know who else is in the room?


By clicking on the three lines (Participants) in the sidebar, you can view all guests in the room. There, you will see their picture, name and their answer to the icebreaker question. You can also click on any guest and a direct chat will open.

Can I write messages to other guests in the room?

Yotribe has a chat feature that you can open by clicking on the speech bubble icon. You can send direct private messages to other guests (Private), messages to all guests in your current circle (Circle) or else send a message to the whole room (Everyone).

What kinds of events can I host on Yotribe?

Any group event where you want spontaneity and flexibility. Some ideas for virtual events:

You can host a panel, talk or presentation:

  • Invite guests to join the event by sending the room link
  • Let them mingle in the room before the event officially begins
  • Share your talk through speech mode
  • When the talk ends, let participants hang around, chat and mingle before the next talk or before the event ends

You can host coffee chats/networking events:

  • Define conversation areas through the background image
  • Invite guests to join the event by sending the room link
  • Let people form their own little conversational groups
  • Make occasional announcements to the room to moderate the event or inform guests about things

Fairs/conferences:

  • Create a space with booths, stands and areas through the background image
  • Invite guests to join the event by sending the room link
  • Have sponsors or other hosts stand at their defined spot in the room
  • Let guests move around the room to discover booths and network in between
  • Make occasional announcements to the room to moderate the event or inform guests about things
Does Yotribe integrate with other virtual event platforms?

You can use Yotribe with any other event platform or virtual communication tool. Just send the link for the Yotribe room to your participants either before or during your event (e.g. through the chat function of Zoom) and have people move over. To prevent audiofeedback, guests should close other communication apps while they use Yotribe.

Can I change the background?

You can change the background by clicking on the gear icon (Settings) and choosing ‘change room background’. Yotribe supports PNG, JPG and SVG. The ideal format is 2600 x 1800.

Can I ask my guests questions?

Yes, through the icebreaker question feature. Click on the gear icon (Settings) and choose Update icebreaker question to set, update or remove the question. Guests will be asked your question when entering the room and their answer will be shown next to their name in the participant list.

Can I make an announcement as the host?

You can make an announcement by clicking on the announcement feature. All other conversations will be stopped and your Videostream will be shown to all participants.

Security/Privacy.

How do I prevent unwanted guests from entering the room (Zoombombing)?

If you want to close your room to the public, set a guest password. As an admin, you can set, remove or change the guest password anytime by clicking on the gear icon (Settings) and choosing Set a password for guests.

How do I know who is listening to my conversation?

Only guests who are standing in the circle right next to you can participate in your conversation, so you can see who you are speaking to. There is no way for guests to be hidden, so you always see their avatar, hear them and see their screen. You can also always see all guests who are currently in the room.

What data do you store?

Yotribe does not have access to any of your audio or video data. We briefly hold the data to transmit it, but do not store it, and our employees cannot access it. Yotribe also doesn’t have any personified data on its guests (e.g. addresses or bank details) because we don’t ask for them. If you request your own room, we ask for your email to send it to you. We store your profile picture, name and chat so that your information doesn’t get lost between sessions.
